Medicinal Value/Uses

Good for central and peripheral nervous system, cardiovascular system and liver. Prevent skin diseases. Nelli is useful in treatment for leucorrhoea.

Why are they Unique?

Nelli are well known in Sri Lanka from very early days. Nelli has bitter taste with slight sweet after taste. It has very pleasant green color. Nelli is cultivated as small scale orchards as well as home gardens. Currently Nelli is cultivated in entire Sri Lanka except very high elevation.

Potential for Nelli fruit processing industry

Nelli fruit processing industry in Sri Lanka is still not properly developed. Nelli can be used to produce different value added products such as cordials and RTS. These value added products can be produced by either cottage level or large scale level. In addition to that research and development activities should initiate to identify maturity index for different types of Nelli, storage methods, environmental and consumer friendly ripening methods, development of value added products with enhanced shelf life and preserve nutritional quality etc.
